Has your home been built before 1980? Then it can contain asbestos in roof shingles, pipe cement, flashing, old floor tiles, ceiling tiles, siding and insulation especially around pipes, boilers, fireplaces, ducts, sheeting, sometimes even in the joint compound that’s used on gaps between pieces of sheetrock.

Homes with attics may be contaminated with asbestos by vermiculate attic insulation. But home owners be warned, even some newly built houses may contain asbestos too.

How does Asbestos spread?

Asbestos is most hazardous when it is in the air we breathe. If for some reason the insulation around boilers, furnaces and pipes deteriorate over time then asbestos fibres get released. If a house has a blown ceiling which has asbestos and is drilled or patched then it releases fibres. Sometimes when homes and the ceilings of the homes are old and worn out even the air circulation from ceiling fans as well when draperies are opened or closed they spread asbestos dust.

One major problem which owners face is when Asbestos transite pipes are used in underground pipes which transport water to homes. Many people may not know but transite is cement which has asbestos, they deteriorate over time with continuous use. When this happens there is always danger of asbestos fibres being released into the drinking water which flows through the pipe?

How you can get your home checked for Asbestos?

One should not depend on visual inspection to start with. If you suspect that there is asbestos in your home then the best step is to send the suspected samples for analysis to certified laboratories. The two approved methods of analyzing asbestos are Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It is also advised that home owners should hire a certified asbestos professional to collect the samples. It will minimize the risk of exposure.

What does one do if Asbestos is found in the House?

Calling a professional asbestos removal company to ensure that the fibres do not become airborne is crucial. The first thing to do is to determine whether it is friable or non–friable and where it is found. If it is friable asbestos then it will easily crumble or reduce to a powder and can contaminate the air. While non–friable asbestos are tightly bound with another material and therefore its dust will not easily mix with the air. It is best to keep monitoring all asbestos containing material in the house; they can deteriorate anytime and pose a hazard.

Sometimes asbestos containing materials are repaired or isolated and not removed if they are in a good condition. A temporary solution can be to isolate the material using a sturdy and airtight barrier. Some restoration services use Encapsulants, they are material in a liquid form, when sprayed they seal the asbestos fibres from releasing. But be warned it works when asbestos containing material is not damaged. But the best solution is removal of asbestos from homes. If one is hiring specialists then make sure HEPA vacuum, approved respirators and disposable clothing are being used. In the end our advise-choose a trained professional who is certified to do asbestos abatement work.
